“Faszination Modellbau” presents spectacular starts, cool challenges, and thrilling chases at the Drone Championship Finals in Hall A6. The e-athletes, dressed in hoodies and baseball caps, sit intently at their ultra-sensitive controllers. Behind their video goggles, not a single sound seems to escape. But then it begins: 3, 2, 1, ACTION! With a whirring sound, the racing drones, powered by their small, powerful electric motors, shoot through the treacherous course filled with obstacles. The demands on the pilots’ reaction times and concentration are high. The drone is controlled via a live video feed from the drone’s camera, as if the pilot were on board themselves—this principle is called FPV, or “First Person View.” At the same time, the audience is directly connected to the multicopters’ perspective via big screens during every flight maneuver, fully immersing them in the real and digital drone action. Crashes are always part of the show, which is why the winning drone is greeted with frenetic applause as it races through the finish gate. And this indoor highlight isn’t just for drone enthusiasts. These small racing drones feature an astonishing blend of technology: they combine a powerful computer, attitude sensors, the latest battery technology, carbon fiber frames, and a high-performance camera—all of which have played a major role in the drone boom. The latest generation of multicopter models even has a follow-me function to film the owner during his outdoor adventures at any time. It’s a mega-thrill packed with testosterone for both the pilots and the audience—and it’s organized by one of the scene’s leading event organizers: Team Aircrasher.
