Founded in 1999 by Dave Everett, the R2 Builders Club is now an Internet community with about 5000 members worldwide. Here, the Internet is used as an exchange platform to achieve a collaborative goal… build your very own life-size astromech droid. You can reach the club on the German website www.astromech.de, the German forum at forum.astromech.de. Our droids are built from all sorts of different materials, including plastic, wood, metal and fiberglass. With this, there are several ways to build a droid. Anyone with some basic woodworking knowledge and determination can do it. It mainly depends on what material and tools are available and what you prefer to work with. The hobby of functional modeling is presented against a beautiful backdrop. Throughout the day, questions about modeling will be answered. Topics focus on a wide variety of manufacturing processes that can be used to build a droid. Illustrative examples are used to explain how to age parts and make them look weathered. Elsewhere, many examples explain how the electronics in an R2-D2 work. At any time it is possible to take pictures with the droids.
